Back to Southern Region of Ireland
Ballybunion Golf Club was founded in 1893 after a course had been laid out on the links the previous year by James McKenna. The club struggled during its early years causing it to fold in 1899, but was eventually re-established, with the course restored to eighteen holes in 1927. Tom Simpson later supervised major alterations in 1936, while Tom Watson advised on further improvements during the 1990s. United States former president Bill Cliton played the old course on two separate occasions.
The par 71 Old Course measures 6,739 yards from the blue tees and is set among enormous natural dunes overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Narrow fairways, deep bunkers, elevated small greens and constant coastal winds demand accurate shot-making. The back nine weaves through some of the tallest dunes in the country offering spectacular natural views to the challenge of the course.
With the reputation of one of the best links courses across Great Britain, The course has been host for the Irish Amateur Championship, Palmer Cup and Irish Open. The Old course currently ranks 9th in Great Britain and Ireland and 29th Globally by Top 100 Courses.
