Lanark Golf Club was founded in 1851 on the Common Moor, making it the world’s oldest inland golf course still played on its original ground. The original course contained six holes before Old Tom Morris and George Sayers extended the layout to eighteen holes in 1897. James Braid later carried out significant alterations in 1927, creating several new holes and shaping much of the course that remains in play today.
The par 70 course measures 6,428 yards and is laid across free-draining glacial sands around 600 feet above sea level. Although inland, its firm-running fairways give it a surprisingly links-like character, while heather, gorse, natural hollows and undulating ground create a traditional moorland challenge. The elevated setting also provides wide views across the surrounding South Lanarkshire countryside.
Lanark is currently ranked 33rd in Scotland by Top 100 Golf Courses. It has hosted a number of important amateur events including the British Girls’ Championship, Scottish Girls’ Championship, Scottish Youth Championship and Girls’ Home Internationals.
