Machrihanish Golf Club was founded in 1876 under the original name of the Kintyre Club. The first course contained ten holes before Prestwick professional Charles Hunter extended the layout to twelve. Old Tom Morris was then invited to redesign the course in 1879, extending it to eighteen holes and moving the famous opening tee to its present position. Small alterations were later made by J.H. Taylor in 1914 and Sir Guy Campbell following the Second World War.
It will be hard to come across a more natural, remote, and rugged course than the championship course at Machrihanish Golf Club. It follows a classic out-and-back design, winding along Machrihanish Beach as it heads away from the village, then turning back toward home at the halfway point. The Championship course may not be the longest as it measures 6226 yards from the whites. However, it possesses a thrilling experience for all golfers with rolling dunescapes, immaculate greens, and breathtaking sea views.
Machrihanish is currently ranked 14th in Scotland by Top 100 Golf Courses and 26th across Great Britain and Ireland. Its remote location means it has hosted fewer major professional championships than many famous Scottish links
