Founded in 1889, the golf club was initially located in Shaw Hills. It opened its first 9-hole course in October 1889. In 1894, it moved to the scenic Birkdale Hills, and by 1897, it settled at its current site, where George Lowe designed an 18-hole course.
Measuring over 7,100 yards from the tips, the par 70 course is known for its flat fairways which offer clear views from the tee. However, the constant presence of wind adds to the challenge, making the course quite demanding, while the greens can be very difficult to read. Deep pot bunkers and thick rough punish inaccurate shots, making good course management essential throughout the round.
The course hosted the Open championship 11 times with 2026 being the most recent, Birkdale has also hosted the Womans open six times and the Ryder Cup twice. Royal Birkdale has ranked amongst the top 10 courses in England for almost two decades.
