Sunningdale’s New Course was designed by renowned architect and former Secretary, Harry Colt, and first opened in 1923. It was commissioned following the end of the First World War.

The New Course is known for its rugged character, with fewer bunkers and less tree cover than the Old Course. Its narrow, winding fairways lined with thick heather lead to small, often elevated greens, creating a course that is both challenging and ideal for skilled drivers. The New gives players room to maneuver as it is more open than the Old, although it still requires long accurate shots from its raised tees to narrow fairways. Recent restoration efforts have included selective tree removal, allowing heather to thrive once again.

The New Course at Sunningdale is widely celebrated as one of the UK's top inland courses, frequently ranking alongside the Old. Top 100 Golf Courses placed the New Course 3rd in England and 41st worldwide.
