Organised golf at North Berwick began in 1832 when the club was formed by Captain Sir David Baird of Newbyth and ten founding members used a six-hole course on the links. The course expanded to nine holes in 1868 and grew into a full 18-hole layout by 1877. Ben Sayers later supervised alterations in 1932 which helped create the layout largely played today.
The West Links is a traditional par 71 links measuring around 6,400 yards and is famous for requiring imagination rather than excessive length. The sea comes into play on six holes while stone walls, deep bunkers and undulating greens create unusual challenges throughout the round.
North Berwick is currently ranked 6th in Scotland and 42nd in the world by Top 100 Golf Courses. North Berwick Golf course has regularly served as Final Qualifying for The Open Championship and has also hosted the The Amateur Championship.
